Medical Aid & Physiotherapy Billing

Medical aid cover is usually the first thing people worry about before booking physiotherapy. Here's exactly how it works at Peak Physiotherapy — no jargon, no surprises.

How it works, step by step

  1. Book directly

No referral is needed to book or start treatment with us. If your specific scheme requires a referral to reimburse a claim, we’ll let you know during your benefits check so there are no surprises.

  2. We run a benefits check

Before your first visit, we can check your available day-to-day or savings benefit for physiotherapy, so you know roughly what’s covered before you commit to anything.

  3. We bill your scheme directly

In most cases you won’t pay upfront and claim back yourself — we submit the claim to your medical aid directly at standard physiotherapy rates.

  4. You’re kept in the loop

If your benefit runs out partway through treatment, or your plan only covers part of the cost, we’ll tell you before it happens — not after.

Day-to-day benefit, savings account, or above-threshold cover?

Most South African medical aid schemes pay for physiotherapy from your day-to-day or savings benefit — essentially your own annual allocation for out-of-hospital healthcare. Some higher-tier plans also offer additional cover once your claims for the year pass a certain threshold. Exactly how your plan works depends on your scheme and the specific option you're on, which is exactly why we run a benefits check before your first visit rather than guessing.

No medical aid? No problem.

We also see private (cash-pay) patients. Get in touch for a quote before you book — we're upfront about costs from the start, so there's nothing unexpected at your first session.

Common questions

Do I need a referral for my medical aid to pay for physiotherapy?

Not to book with us — you can start treatment directly. Whether your specific medical aid plan requires a referral to reimburse the claim depends on your scheme and plan option. We’ll check this as part of your benefits check and let you know if anything’s needed.

Which medical aids do you work with?

We work with all South African medical aids. If you’re unsure whether your specific plan covers physiotherapy, get in touch and we’ll run a benefits check before your first appointment.

Do you bill my medical aid directly, or do I pay and claim back?

We bill most medical aids directly, so in most cases you won’t need to pay upfront and claim back yourself. We confirm the details with your scheme before your first visit.

Is physiotherapy paid from my day-to-day benefit or my savings account?

This depends on your specific plan. Most South African medical aid schemes pay physiotherapy from your day-to-day or savings benefit, though some plans offer additional cover once you reach a certain claims threshold. Because this varies by scheme and plan option, we recommend a benefits check so you know exactly where you stand.

What happens if my medical aid benefit runs out during treatment?

We’ll tell you before it happens, not after. If your day-to-day or savings benefit is close to running out, we’ll let you know what your options are — including private (cash-pay) rates if you’d like to continue treatment.

What if I don’t have medical aid?

We also see private (cash-pay) patients. Get in touch for a quote — we’re upfront about costs before you book, so there are no surprises at your first visit.

What should I bring for a medical aid claim?

Your medical aid card (or membership number) and ID. If you have a referral letter, scans, or reports, bring those too, though they’re not required to start treatment.
